Amazon suspends deliveries in France until May 5

Amazon is extending the closure of its warehouses in France until May 5.

The firm closed its six warehouses on April 16 after a court in Nanterre ordered it to only deliver essential products until the company assessed the risks for its workers related to the Covid-19 epidemic.

If this was not respected, the company would be fined €1million per day and per offence, it was ruled.

Amazon chose to close its warehouses for the time being and appealed the decision but the appeal failed as the court of appeal of Versailles agreed with the Nanterre court that Amazon should only deliver essential products, such as food, health, hygiene and medical products.

However, it remains tricky for the company as items such as nail clippers, nail polishes, etc, can be found online under these categories but are not deemed essential by the court.

The company says it will keep its warehouses closed until it has found the “best way to operate in light of the court of appeal's decision” and to avoid any fine.

Workers have been asked to stay home and the company says they will be paid 100% of their salary. Deliveries from third party sellers can continue as the items are not stocked in the warehouses but others are suspended.
