CARLA Bruni-Sarkozy has given birth to a girl in La Muette clinic in Paris.
News of the birth quickly spread to reporters round the clinic but there was no official confirmation from the Elysée. It was later confirmed by Carla's staff. No details of the baby's name have been revealed.
The Elysée has given no information on Bruni's pregnancy but she, herself, said in a TF1 TV interview that she would not allow any pictures of the child to be used: "I will do everything to protect this child. I will never show pictures of this child, I will never expose this child. I think exposure to public life is a choice to be made by an adult."
Sarkozy, himself, was not present at the birth which happened between 19.00 and 19.30 last night but arrived at 23.00 direct from Frankfurt where he had been in talks on European finances with Angela Merkel. He left the hospital just after midnight.
He had visited the hospital during the afternoon before heading to Frankfurt for talks in advance of Sunday's European summit and visited again this morning.
This is a second child for Mrs Sarkozy – she already has a son – and a fourth child and first baby girl for the president. It is the first time a president has become a father while in office.
