Baker who puts ‘art’ into artisan
Alsace boulanger named world champion after creating music-themed work of bread art in eight hours
ALSACE baker Antoine Robillard has been named world champion in the ‘artistic’ category in this year’s “Europain” competition, held in the Paris Villepinte exhibition centre.
He had just eight hours to create a piece based on the theme of “world music”, using five different doughs.
You can see his winning artwork here.
Speaking about the competition, Mr Robillard, who had been preparing for the competition for four years, said: “At first, it is a challenge. I wanted to see how far I could go.
He added that leaving behind the traditional forms of breadmaking helped “bring life to my work”.
He was helped in his endeavours by his family, who he said were happy to lend a hand, and hope his new-found fame will help “boost sales” in the boulangerie in Niederroedern et Seltz, le Bas-Rhin
Other master bakers in the competition were Yuki Nagata from Japan, who won the bread category, while the viennoiserie award was taken by Sweden’s Hakan Johansson.
