Barrier-free tolls tested at Antibes

An eco-friendly motorway toll system allowing drivers to pay without stopping is being trialled in the south

AN eco-friendly motorway toll system allowing drivers to pay without stopping is being trialled in the south of France.

The “Free Flow” system, which is already in place in other parts of Europe, Amercia, and Australia, uses laser recognition coupled with a differed payment method, meaning drivers do not have to slow down or stop therefore cutting C02 emissions and traffic jams.

The traditional barrier is replaced by a detector which carries out four readings – front and rear number plates, vehicle classification and the electronic tag in the car for the motorway toll.

It is currently on trial at the toll just before Antibes on the A8, in the direction of Italy.

Technical director from motorway authority Escota Fabrice Frajut said: “The method of payment still has to be defined. For example, it may be by the electronic tagging system for those who are already subscribed, or payment online for others.”

If the trial proves successful there are plans to equip the entire south-east motorway network with the system in the future.
