‘Bring back historic Brittany’

Regional Council calls for reunification of historic Brittany as government considers how map of France could be redrawn

THE REGIONAL council of Brittany has called for Loire-Atlantique to become part of a reunited 'historic Brittany'.

The council is taking advantage of President Francois Hollande’s plans to reduce the number of regions and redraw the map of France to cut red tape and costs.

It said that it was taking advantage of “the prospects for territorial modernisation of France” to push for the opportunity “to reunite historic Brittany”.

In addition to the four departments that currently make up the region - Côtes d’Armor, Finistère, Ille-et-Vilaine and Morbihan - Brittany also historically included the Loire-Atlantique, which is currently part of the Pays de la Loire.

To promote “greater clarity of policy in Brittany”, the proposal also features a plan to establish “an objective analysis of the consequences caused by a Breton Assembly”.

According to the magazine Challenges, the reunification of historic Brittany is among the options that could be put to Prime Minister Manuel Valls.

The magazine says it has seen a draft proposal of a new map of France, featuring 12 regions, which would feature the dismantling of the Pays de la Loire.

Under the plans, the magazine says, Loire-Atlantique would return to Brittany, while Mayenne, Sarthe and Maine-et-Loire would be integrated into a new Loire Valley region.

The Vendée would join a region called Aquitaine-Poitou-Limousin.

A survey taken as Manuel Valls further outlined the plans in his first speech as Prime Minister earlier this month, revealed that the majority of French people don't want to see their regions disappear.

A event in favour of the reunification of historic Brittany will take place in Nantes tomorrow.
