Cameras to catch red light jumpers
Other offences such as driving too close to other cars could be spotted by radars at junctions and tunnels from 2009.
CAMERAS designed to catch motorists jumping red lights and tailgating could be running in 2009.
The announcement by Road Security Minister Michèle Merli came on the fifth anniversary of the installation of speed cameras in France.
The 500 cameras will be rolled out gradually in Paris, Lyon, Marseille, Bordeaux, Toulouse Strasbourg, Metz and Nancy.
The minister said they would be placed at accident blackspots and would be marked by road signs.
Jumping a red light can carry penalties including a fine of up to €135, up to four licence points taken off and suspension of a licence for up to three years.
