Car crash Brit in critical condition

One of five tourists struck down by a drunk-driver in Rennes at the weekend is said to be 'between life and death'

A BRITISH tourist remains in a critical condition in hospital after being struck down by a drunk-driver in Rennes at the weekend.

The 40-year-old man was trapped beneath the car following the accident in the city centre at about 01.00 on Saturday.

He was part of a group of five British tourists from Jersey who had come to Brittany for the weekend.

A 35-year-old woman was seriously injured and remains in hospital. The three others in the group had minor injuries and have now been discharged.

A police source told AFP that the driver was speeding along the banks of the river Vilaine, jumped a red light and lost control of the car while turning on to the place de la Bretagne.

Tests carried out several hours after the accident revealed he had 2g of alcohol in his blood – the equivalent of eight glasses of wine, and four times the legal limit.

A UK Foreign Office spokeswoman said next of kin had been informed and consular assistance was being provided.
