Peugeot gets 141mpg with new diesel – or enough to travel three times from Bordeaux to Paris
CAR giant Peugeot has set a new record for low fuel consumption – getting 141mpg from a 208 on a full tank of diesel.
That would be enough to travel three times from Bordeaux to Paris as the five-speed 1.6l car covered 2,152km on a plein of 43litres.
Tested at the Belchamp circuit near its Sochaux plant in the east of France, the BlueHDI 100 S&S model was fitted with Michelin Energy Saver+ tyres and an aerodynamic spoiler to reduce drag.
It ran for 38 hours at an average of 56kph with the drivers swapping over every three or four hours.
Although diesel sales have been hard hit by recent publicity over the health dangers of fine particulate pollution, the new 208 has extremely low CO2 emissions of just 79g/km due to its particulate filter and Selective Catalytic Reduction systems. The previous model had emissions of 87g/km.
One of Peugeot’s new range of Very Low Consumption cars, it goes on sale next month but because the test was done on a test circuit ordinary drivers will not get 141mpg but even getting close will mean a major saving on fuel costs.
Peugeot recognises this as its official mixed driving consumption figure for the car is 94mpg - although a recent Which? magazine report in the UK highlighted that official figures were inaccurate in 98% of cases.
French road tests give fuel consumption as litres per 100km and the 208 got 1.99l/100km - hitting the target set by the French government last year for car companies to better 2l/100km.
A recent test in UK magazine Auto Express had the Peugeot 208 1.6 Blue HDi as its No1 model for fuel consumption, hitting 94.1mpg in mixed usage – a good guide to everyday consumption.
