Charity prepares to serve 1m people
Restos du Coeur launches its 29th winter campaign, providing meals to those in need
THE charity Restos du Coeur, which launches its winter campaign today, believes it will serve more than one million meals this winter.
Last year the association helped 960,000 people and served 130m meals
The president of the group, Olivier Berthe, said the current economic situation gave little hope for improvement and added he believed the group would pass the symbolic one million mark this winter.
Restos was created in 1985 by the comedian and one-time presidential candidate Coluche,
Its 66,000 volunteers at 2070 across the country will open from today until March serving food boxes.
The group is searching for finance as EU funds destined for food programmes are due to be reduced. Currently public donations only make up 30% of funding for the group.
It is also working to improve its food recovery programme which uses edible products that are due to be thrown away by supermarkets; one quarter of its food supplies come from this method.
You can deduct 75% of donations to the charity off against your final tax bill, up to a limit of €521. Above this threshold and you can only take off 66% of donations, up to a total limit of 20% of your taxable income. Make a donation here.
