Driving licence delays blamed on computer bugs

Online application system leaves learner drivers 'waiting months' for licences

Published Modified

The bug-riddled online system for driving licence applications is keeping would-be learner drivers off the streets, and preventing newly-qualified motorists from getting their full licences, it has emerged.

The ANTS online registration system was hailed as simpler and quicker when it was rolled out nationwide in November 2017 - but Franceinfo reports that learner drivers are having to wait weeks or even months for their provisional licences, or are unable to properly connect to the website. Connexion readers, too, have reported problems in applying for replacement licences.

Difficulties have long been recognised in Val-d'Oise, where the scheme has been piloted since spring last year. One driving school in Franconville claims that it about 20 would-be learners on its books have been waiting for their licences for several months.

The delays have led to insurance problems, driving instructors have said, while those who have passed their tests cannot drive because their full licences have not been validated.
