Extra pay for fonctionnaires
As civil servants take to the streets in protest at job losses, the government announces a special payment.
Civil servants will receive a special wage bonus, the government has announced.
The payment will be calculated on length of service, wages and inflation and will affect 15% of civil servants, about 300,000 workers, according to government estimations.
Roughly half of them could receive more than 700 euros in the autumn following an assessment.
The payment will be based on wages between 2003 and 2007. The government plans a second bonus in 2011 for those working between 2006 and 2010.
Budget minister Eric Woerth said the payment was a provisional measure before the government attacked the root of the problem.
Civil servants went on strike today in protest at government reforms including plans to reduce jobs in the civil service and increase the number of years to contribute to state pensions from 40-41.
