You can fill in your tax return online from today by going to www.impot.gouv.fr
When going to the site, click on the Je déclare en ligne tab which will take you through the process, which is only in French.
Last year 7.4 million tax returns were filled in electronically, against 5 million in 2005.
Filing an online tax return carries a number of advantages.
Payment receipts do not need to be sent to the tax authorities, although these should be kept is they decide to check your return.
Also, the tax payer will know exactly how much must be paid as the online form makes calculations as the numbers are added.
Finally, for those paying their income taxes online for the first time, there is a €20 reduction on the final bill.
