Flesh-eating bacteria in shrimp sparks major recall in France

A brand of frozen shrimp has been recalled across France after flesh-eating bacteria was discovered in one batch. 

The 400g bags of tropical shrimp were sold by supermarket Aldi under the Golden Seafood brand between March 18 and June 5, 2024. 

A recall notice was issued on June 24 by Rappel Conso, the government recall website after traces of the vibrio vulnificus bacteria were found. 

Anyone who bought the product is advised to return it to the supermarket for a refund.

Consuming the product could cause “mild gastrointestinal disorders” in healthy people but could lead to more severe reactions, including sepsis, in people who have pre-existing conditions or weakened immune systems, Rappel Conso said. 

The product was sold in Aldi stores in the following regions:

• Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes

• Centre-Val de Loire

• Grand-Est

• Hauts-de-France

• Ile-de-France

• Normandie

• Nouvelle-Aquitaine

• Occitanie

• Provence-Alpes-Côte d'azur
