Flu vaccine campaign kicks off in France this week

Flu season is rapidly approaching in France - with susceptible groups encouraged to be vaccinated as soon as possible.

The annual flu vaccination campaign kicks off on Tuesday, October 15.

Following a successful trial in four regions last year, pharmacies across France will be able to give vaccinations to anyone in the groups for which treatment is recommended without them first having to go and see a doctor for a prescription.

Vaccines are recommended for:

• People aged 65 and over;
• Adults over 18 years of age with chronic diseases (cardiovascular, respiratory, neurological, renal, hepatic, diabetes 1 and 2), immuno-compromised or sickle cell disease;
• Obese people;
• Pregnant women 18 years of age or older and the family and friends of some infants under 6 months of age with risk factors.

Only specially trained pharmacists are allowed to give vaccines. Their services will be advertised on a poster in the pharmacy.

Ahead of the annual campaign, letters and vouchers for free vaccines are being sent to people in affected groups.

Anyone receiving a voucher for the first time can take it straight to a trained pharmacist, who will be able to give the vaccination.

Pregnant women, those with babies under six months old and obese people should talk to their doctor or midwife, who can print a voucher to take to a pharmacy.
