France international defender Maxence Lacroix arranged for pizzas to be delivered to his entire home village of Ajat, in the Dordogne, during France’s World Cup opener against Senegal.
The first delivery took place on June 16, and the initiative will be repeated for every Les Bleus match at the tournament.
On that evening, residents gathered in a local fan zone in the village to watch the game while receiving the unexpected pizza delivery. The initiative was organised via the player’s family, with his mother coordinating the ordering and distribution.
“It was his idea, but his mother organised everything,” the secretary of the Ajat mairie told The Connexion. “We were not too surprised because we know him. He has always been kind and never forgets about the village. He is very close to it.”
The maire secretary, who did not wish to be named, added that while residents are well aware of his attachment to his roots, they were nonetheless deeply moved.
“We are very proud of him and everything he has achieved,” she added.
Residents of the small village, which has around 300 inhabitants, described being pleasantly surprised. “Everyone was very pleased, and they ate very well!” the secretary joked.
Villagers then watched the match together in the fan zone while enjoying the delivery.
Lacroix was a substitute for the game, which France won 3-1 thanks to two goals from their star striker Kylian Mbappé.
