France may embrace the ‘doggy bag’
Hoteliers union teams up with start-up business to help cut the 20kg of food wasted annually by every person in France
RESTAURANTS in France may finally be ready to embrace the concept of the “doggy bag”.
In an attempt to combat part of the problem of food waste, the hoteliers’ union Union des Métiers et des Industries de l’Hôtellerie (UMIH) has teamed up with the start-up business the TakeAway group to “generalise the practice doggy bag and so provide concrete and practical solution to the thousands of professionals wishing to offer the service to their customers”.
Created in March 2014, TakeAway supplies microwaveable cardboard "doggy bags" and "wine bags" for transporting any unfinished bottles of wine. It is hoped they will help cut the estimated 20kg of food that everyone in France throws away each year.

The partnership follows in the wake of a “food pact”, launched in October 2013, which aims to cut food waste by 50% by 2025.
Last October, Prime Minister Manuel Valls asked former food minister Guillaume Garot to chair a commission on food waste. Its report is expected soon.
