Free contraception for 15-18s
Contraceptive pills and implants available on prescription at no cost, health minister announces
GIRLS aged 15-18 can obtain certain types of contraception free of charge from today.
First and second-generation contraceptive pills and contraceptive implants are covered by the new measure, which was promised by President Hollande during his election campaign.
They can be obtained free from pharmacies on presentation of a prescription and a Carte Vitale. It will not show up in health insurance statements - meaning those who make use of the new measure can remain anonymous.
The move aims to improve access to contraception for teenagers and reduce the number of abortions, which currently stands at about 12,000 a year.
Until now, the contraceptive pill has been reimbursed at 65% - costing the govenrment €6million a year. Free access is expected to cost an extra €5million.
Abortions have also been made free, health minister Marisol Touraine announced. Until now they have cost between €200 and €450.
