A significant drop in temperatures on Saturday will coincide with the return of frost and snow to several low-lying areas including Paris.
However, snow is unlikely to settle outside of mountainous areas, with rain on Sunday likely to wash away any remaining coverage.
Temperatures will quickly rise again in the north on Sunday, though in the east temperatures will struggle to reach above 3C across the weekend.
Continued rainfall in the south and the west means river flooding warnings are likely to remain in place across the weekend.
Friday February 13
Following the passage of Storm Nils, a new storm dubbed Oriana by Spanish meteorological authorities will hit the south of France on Friday and bring further rainfall.
Persistent rain will cover almost all of France throughout the day save from the Alps, where avalanche warnings are in place at a number of ski resorts.
Precipitation will enhance the risk of river flooding across the area, with several rivers facing flood warnings.
This includes a red level warning (the highest possible) for stretches of the Garonne river in the Gironde and Dordogne departments lasting until at least Saturday.
Temperatures will remain at average levels, hovering between 9-14C.
Saturday February 14
Valentine’s Day will coincide with a sharp fall in temperatures, with highs of 5-8C across the north, and as low as around 3C in the east.
The south will continue to see highs of 10-14C.
Light snowfall is expected in the north-east from early morning, bringing a dusting following widespread frost.
Following the early morning snow, a mix of snow and rain will continue to fall in parts of the east, reaching as far west as Paris.
However, snow is only likely to settle at altitudes of around 500-700m and above.
Elsewhere, skies will be sunny despite the chilly weather. Flood warnings are likely to persist in the south-west, even if rainfall remains limited.
Sunday February 15
Forecasters are less certain about Sunday’s conditions, although a bout of further snowfall is expected in the north and the west.
However, incoming weather patterns from the Atlantic bringing both slightly warmer temperatures and rainfall will quickly dispel snow and prevent settling.
Highs of 13C in Brittany are expected despite persistent rainfall, as well as around 9C in Normandy, 12C in the south-west, and up to 15C along the Mediterranean.
In the east, temperatures will remain low (highs of 2C) and snow is more likely to settle.
Mountain ranges in the east are likely to see significant snowfall, with drivers heading to ski resorts amid the peak school holiday season being warned to drive cautiously on mountainous roads.
With further persistent rain in the west and south-west, and only the south-east free of any rain on Sunday, river flooding warnings are likely to remain in place. Residents should check with local forecasts and alerts to see the situation in their area.
