Calmer, if somewhat damp, weather will return across France this weekend.
Following the passage of several major storms in France last week – including a deadly tornado in northern France and Storm Benjamin – the calm conditions will be a welcome reprieve.
However, temperatures will be significantly cooler than at the start of the week.
Friday October 24
Heightened weather warnings have been lifted this morning, however several less severe alerts remain in place, mostly for rising river levels as a result of this week’s downpours.
Pockets of rain in northern and western France are likely, as most areas face a grey day.
Only the Mediterranean will see any significant levels of sunshine.
Temperatures will reach between 12C and 15C in the north, and up to 22C in the south.
However, they will drop in the evening, potentially down to 5C in rural parts of the north and east.
Snowfall in the Vosges and Jura mountains at altitudes below 1,000m are possible, after the first snowflakes were spotted in the area overnight.
The Alps will continue to see snow at progressively lower altitudes.
Saturday October 25
Conditions will worsen on Saturday, as rain hits most areas and winds become slightly stronger.
Conditions will not be strong enough to develop into storms, however, and rain will be fleeting and showery in most places.
Brittany should remain free of rain, as will most of the Mediterranean coast, although sunshine is unlikely in either area.
Temperatures will drop, reaching between 10C and 12C in the north, and up to 15C in the south.
Temperatures of 17C along the Mediterranean are an outlier.
Sunday October 26
Rain will again hit much of France, covering a diagonal streak between the Pyrénées and German border. It will be stronger in the morning, getting progressively patchier as the day goes on.
Sunnier skies will return to the south-east, although coastal winds of up to 90 km/h are expected.
Temperatures will drop further in parts of the north, well into single figures and potentially only reaching 7C in parts of eastern France (up to 13C elsewhere).
In the south, highs of 12C - 15C are expected, up to 20C around Nice, but on a whole it will be markedly chillier day than Friday.
Early forecasts for next week show a bout of rain at the start of the week covering most of the country, before a dry but cloudy midweek takes over.
