France begins a week of unusually mild temperatures for December, with scattered rain bands limited to the north, and the south largely dry and settled. Central areas will enjoy brighter spells at times while snow is expected to melt in the Vosges, Jura and Massif Central.

Monday December 8: persistent mild weather

The north starts cloudy with a little light rain, especially in Brittany and along the Channel coast. Further south, morning fog will lift to give a mostly sunny day from Nouvelle-Aquitaine to Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

Sunshine will spread into the Centre-Val de Loire and Burgundy later. The wind will be settled overall, except along the Channel coast and Brittany where brisk gales will prevail, bringing rain by nightfall.

Afternoon temperatures reach 14 to 17C in the north, 15 to 18C in the south, and close to 20C near the Pyrenees.

Tuesday December 9: grey south, wet north-west

Low cloud will stay in place from the Gulf of Lion through Toulouse to the Rhône valley.

Rain will continue in Brittany and the Cotentin peninsula.

Elsewhere, the low cloud cover will give way to sunny spells in patches.

Temperatures will remain well above normal, with 13 to 16C across the north and up to 21 or 22C in the south-west.

Wednesday December 10: rain in the north, brighter elsewhere

Cloud and rain will return between the Belgian border and the Atlantic coast.

Grey and damp weather also persists around the Gulf of Lion, extending towards the Cévennes, Toulouse and the Rhône valley.

Other regions may see better conditions, with sunny intervals from Alsace to the Pyrenees and across Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur and Corsica.

Temperatures will be mild at 6 to 12C in the morning and 12 to 16C in the afternoon.

Thursday December 11: calm and very mild

Cloud will linger across the northern half of France in the morning, clearing slowly.

Later, cloud will build up over the south, from Occitanie to Provence, signalling a return to more humid weather near the Mediterranean.

Overnight, another band of rain reaches Brittany.

Temperatures stay far above December norms, with 4 to 7C early and 10 to 15C in the afternoon, locally up to 18C near the Mediterranean.

Friday December 12 : mostly bright away from the north-west

Low cloud cover and a few light showers will persist near the Mediterranean.

In the north-west, the rain band that arrived overnight spreads further inland, keeping the sky overcast and bringing some coastal showers by evening.

Elsewhere, the day is generally more settled with good sunny spells. Morning temperatures sit between 4 and 8C, rising to 12 to 16C in the afternoon.
