French weekly weather forecast February 9-13: Unsettled with winds of up to 100km/h

Flood risk may increase in several regions and mountain conditions set to worsen

Repeated Atlantic weather systems will bring heavy rain and strong winds from Tuesday, particularly in coastal areas

A wet, windy and unsettled week is expected across most of France, with repeated Atlantic weather systems bringing heavy rain and strong winds from Tuesday. Flood risk will increase in several regions, while conditions in the mountains are set to worsen.

Temperatures will remain fairly mild until Thursday before cooler air arrives from the north.

This is the first week of the school holidays for many (zone A), with difficult travel conditions at times.

Monday, February 9

Rain will affect Atlantic coastal areas from Brittany to Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Elsewhere, conditions will be drier but often grey or misty during the morning.

Some sunshine will return around the Mediterranean after a disturbed weekend. Afternoon temperatures will range from 9C to 13C.

Tuesday, February 10

Rain and wind will spread to almost all regions, with the heaviest rainfall expected in the south-west. Several rounds of rain are likely rather than a single spell.

In the mountains, rain will dominate below 2,000m, increasing snowmelt and runoff. Temperatures will remain mild, reaching around 13C in the north and up to 15C in the south.

Wednesday, February 11

Showers will become heavier and more frequent, especially in the south-west, before spreading eastwards. Some downpours may be locally intense.

Strong westerly winds are expected, with gusts up to 100km/h along the Atlantic coast and 60-90km/h inland. Snow will fall above around 1,500m in the mountains.

Thursday, February 12

A deep depression is expected to cross the country from west to east. This will bring widespread rain and very strong winds, locally exceeding 100km/h.

Disruption is possible, particularly in exposed areas. Temperatures will start to fall, and snow will return to lower mountain elevations.

Friday, February 13

Rain, showers and strong winds are expected to continue, especially in western and south-western regions. Rainfall totals over several days will become significant.

River levels are likely to rise, with a growing risk of flooding in parts of Brittany and other western areas. In the mountains, heavy snowfall will maintain a high avalanche risk.

By Friday evening, winds will turn to the north, bringing cooler air and a more wintry feel ahead of the weekend.
