Half of Walloons want to be French
Poll finds French-speakers in Belgium are increasingly willing to attach their territory to France.
Nearly half of Walloons would like to join France according to a poll run by Belgian and French newspapers.
The study by La Voix du Nord and Belgian daily Le Soir found that support for the area of Wallonia to join France had risen by 20 points in the course of a few months.
A similar study in January found that only 29% of Walloons were keen on the idea.
However 45% of those interviewed said that they were strongly against the suggestion.
On the French side; 60% of those interviewed supported the idea of Wallonia becoming the newest region of France – up six points on a similar poll taken in November 2007.
Belgium has been in political conflict between its French speaking south and Flemish north for more than a year.
