Hermione reaches Canary Islands
Crew of replica frigate dress in period costume for arrival at Las Palmas at the end of first stage of voyage
THE REPLICA of French navy frigate Hermione has arrived at the Canary Islands at the end of the first stage of her transatlantic voyage to America.
The crew of the lovingly crafted 65m vessel dressed in period costume for their arrival at Las Palmas, Gran Canaria, yesterday, after setting sail on their epic voyage from Ile d'Aix on April 18.
The ship and her crew will remain on the islands for six days as they prepare for the next stage of their voyage, which will take them to America.
The original Hermione took General Lafayette to the America to rally rebels fighting Britain in the war of independence in 1781. She too stopped at the Canaries to take on supplies before heading west.
The replica is expected to arrive at Yorktown in Virginia, on June 5, in time to celebrate the anniversary of American troops victory over the British. She will then head to New York for the Independence Day celebrations on July 4.

Daily videos from the voyage are uploaded to the crew's Youtube channel.
