THESE amazing photos show the moment 433 hot air balloons take off from the airfield at Chambley in Meurthe-et-Moselle to break the world record for the greatest number of balloons in the air at the same time.
Balloonists from 60 countries were taking part in the event at the Lorraine Mondial Air Ballons which continues until August 2. The event is considered to be the biggest event of its kind in Europe.
The balloons were divided into three lines along the airfield at Chambley ready for take-off, a total distance of 6km of balloons.
Thousands of spectators turned up despite the early 6.30 start for the spectacular take-off with balloons of all colours and shapes floating in the skies.
There was a Breton balloon decorated with the Brittany symbol, a French château and cartoon characters such as Obelix.
It was the second time that the Guinness World Record was set at Chambley at the Lorraine Mondial Air Ballons as 408 balloons took to the skies two years ago.
The biennial event takes place over 10 days and features balloons as well as microlights, helicopters and gliders. Entry and parking is free.
