Insurance cuts for breathalyser tests

Scheme to oblige drink drivers to have breathalysers installed in cars could be extended to volunteers.

A scheme to fit compulsory breathalysers to the vehicles of convicted drink drivers could be extended so that volunteers could get cuts insurance.

Interior minister Michèle Alliot-Marie is meeting with insurers, car builders and manufacturers of the breathalysers - éthylotests to discuss the project which could become law in the autumn.

While the central plank of the law, which would force convicted drink drivers to fit equipment which would disable their car until they passed a breath test, has been announced, the voluntary scheme has been revealed by radio station RTL.

The station reports the minister will discuss rolling out the equipment, which could be fitted by any driver in order to reduce the cost of their insurance.
