Jesus artwork hit in attack
Protestors have damaged the controversial Piss Christ artwork at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Avignon
PROTESTERS have damaged the controversial Piss Christ artwork at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Avignon, smashing the protective plastic screen and obliterating the face of Jesus.
New Yorker Andres Serrano’s photograph depicting a crucifix in a glass of urine was attacked hours after hundreds of demonstrators gathered outside the museum to protest over the “blasphemous display”.
Two people got inside and attacked the Piss Christ with a hammer. Another photograph, of a nun’s hands at prayer, was also damaged.
Security pictures were passed to police but no arrests made. The museum has reopened.
