New standards for baby bottles
Senate agrees to ban chemical found in plastic from baby milk bottles over health fears
SENATORS have agreed to ban a chemical found in some plastic packaging from being used in baby milk bottles due to health fears.
The Senate voted in favour of the ban on Bisphenol A yesterday, after French food safety body Afssa published a report in February warning of a potential health risk during its initial research into the plastic.
Municipal creches in Paris and Besançon have stopped using milk bottles containing Bisphenol A as a precautionary measure.
The proposed ban has now been passed to the National Assembly for voting. If approved, France would become the first country in the world to ban it.
The ban would be a temporary one and would be lifted if Afssa's research concluded there was no risk.
