New swim record in 100m freestyle

FRENCHMAN Alain Bernard causes controversy with new world record because his swimsuit isn’t ratified for competition

FRENCH swimmer Alain Bernard has become the first to beat 47seconds for the 100metre freestyle – but his new 46.94sec world record is not yet confirmed because he was wearing a swimsuit that had not been homologated for competition.

Bernard finished under the previous record of 47.05 set by Australian Eamon Sullivan at the Beijing Olympics last summer but will have to wait until the swimming authorities decide on the legality of his suit.

There has been controversy over the new type of all-in-one swimming suits, with the Jaked and Speedo LZR models said to be flotation aids.

At the Beijing Olympics last year Bernard won gold in the 100m freestyle, silver in the 4x100m freestyle relay and bronze in the 50m freestyle.
