No Cannes do for flying car

Aeromobil misses chance to land at Riviera airport but joins eye-popping line-up at Top Marques show in Monaco

HOPES that the Aeromobil flying car would fly into Cannes Mandelieu airport this week have been dashed as full flight approval did not come through from aviation authorities.

The stunning looking car would have landed at Cannes and then driven along the Riviera coastline to star at the Top Marques luxury and supercar show in Monaco.

But while the car will still be at the show it will be in a static display – transforming from car to plane every 20 minutes.

The show starts tomorrow at the Grimaldi Forum and runs until April 19.

The flying roadster joins an eye-popping line-up including the 1341 hp Toroidion 1MW road racer, the ultimate performance Tesla S by Russia’s Larte Design, the Mazzanti Evantra and a hand-made 21st century Jaguar replica, La Riviera.

Outside in the port the largest exhibit is the 60m motor yacht Cloud 9, which Burgess has for sale at for €34,900,000.

Even with that line-up the Aeromobil will be one of the stars of the show. Built in Slovakia, its builders had hoped that authorisation would come through from the country’s civil aviation authority that would let it fly into France. However, they are still waiting.

We have a full article on the flying car in this month's Connexion.

The two-seater transforms in seconds from a car, with the wings folded-in at the side, into a plane and can take off a few minutes later. All it needs is a 650ft grass or paved runway. It is expected to go on sale in 2017, priced at several hundred thousand dollars.
