On this day in history.....Year since pair smashed slackline record

Nathan Paulin from Haute-Savoie, followed by the Czech Danny Mensík, a Nice university sport student, beat the world record by taking it in turns to walk across a 1020-metre-long slackline.

Before the men’s achievement last year the record stood at ‘only’ 495 metres.

The walk was a dizzying 600 metres above ground and took place in Aiglun, Alpes-Maritimes last April 22, 2016.

The two slackliners needed to get permission from civil aviation, the villages where the slackline began and ended and that of the ONF (the national forests office) which wanted to ensure the sportsmen would not disturb bird life.

Nathan was the first one to succeed in making it across the line, in one hour thirteen minutes.

"I looked slightly to the left and right, but never below, because that means you are not properly positioned", he explained to the site to e-adrelaine.fr.

It only took Danny 40 minutes to cross the line.

"I don’t know if I would have made it if I had not gone so fast, at the end, I couldn’t do it anymore, I would have had to walk five minutes more and I don’t know if I would have been able to.”

“You need a bit of cladding, strong abs, but mostly it’s in the head”, Danny added.
