Out with the old as you buy the new

After buying a large electrical or electronic device the shop must arrange to take away and recycle your old equipment.

IF YOU buy a new washing machine, television, computer or any other large electrical or electronic device the shop must also arrange to take away and recycle your old equipment.

This should be done under a “un pour un” arrangement meaning the old equipment is taken away as the new item is delivered.

This is funded through the small “éco-participation” payment that is part of the purchase price of the goods and applies to internet purchases as well as those made via traditional shops.

However, while most delivery men will install and fit your new machine as part of the service, some discount companies flout the law and refuse to take away the old machine.

Others may say that the pickup will be done at a later date. This is an offence and the company faces a fine of €450.

This has been the law since 2006 and is regulated under article R543-180 of the Code de l’Environnement and also under European law.
