The event was the French premiere of US film, The Secret Life of Pets 2 (Comme Des Bêtes 2 in French). Attendees included the voice stars of the French version, who each brought a pet corresponding to their character in the movie.

Actress Élodie Fontan, who voices the spoiled grey cat Chlöé (voiced by Lake Bell in the original English version), came with a cat who looked similar to her character; while actor Willie Rovelli came with a rabbit that bore a striking resemblance to his character, hyperactive bunny Pompon (Snowball, voiced by Kevin Hart, in English).

According to Philippe Lacheau, who voices Max (Patton Oswalt in English), 70 animals came along, chaperoned by their owners. Toys and snacks were on offer to keep the pets entertained throughout.

After a slightly chaotic entrance, Mr Lacheau said that the animals behaved themselves well. They were scathing as film critics, however, with many simply going to sleep.

One spectator said: “It’s not a typical screening - it’s true that it is a little surprising. But it’s great. At the beginning I was worried about the sound, with the animals, that it might explode their eardrums, but in general it went well.”

Another, who brought his dog along, said: “It’s really unique. To be able to bring your dog to the cinema is really special and it’s really adorable. Even for the pets it was fun. We were treated like kings, there were toys and snacks. There was everything they needed to have a great premiere.”

The Secret Life of Pets 2 (Comme Des Bêtes 2) will be released in France on July 31.
