Parking fines set to double
MPs hope raising penalty for first time in 25 years will act as a better deterrent for drivers
PARKING fines in France are likely to increase from €11 to €20 next year, to act as a better deterrent for drivers.
The increase has been approved at committee stage by MPs examining the 2011 budget. It will be put to a vote in the National Assembly next week and then the Senate.
The proposal was put forward by Val-de-Marne MP Gilles Carrez in June.
He said the penalty had not changed in 25 years and too many drivers were taking chances and parking on streets without paying.
At their current level, parking fines bring in €600m a year for local authorities - €100m alone in Paris.
