POLICE are warning of in increase in jewellery “snatch” thefts in Paris and other major cities. They say that an average of 10 thefts is reported each day in the capital.

Although a series of arrests have been made over the past two weeks in the 10th, 17th and 19th arrondissements, the Prefecture has launched a new publicity campaign warning people to take care of their valuables.

It says that with the return of the warmer weather thieves are targeting women over 50 who have jewels on show. Gold is the main target as, despite recent falls, it has still risen from €210 an ounce to €1,500 today.
