Streaming giant Netflix has announced that its subscription prices for France are set to increase. The rises, announced on April 17, are:
The Standard package with advertising will increase by €2, from €5.99 per month to €7.99.
The ad-free Standard package will jump by €1.50 to €14.99 per month.
The Premium package, which is ad-free and allows two additional subscribers, will increase by €2 to €21.99.
It comes after the company increased subscription prices in the US last December, and most recently published quarterly results that were higher than expected.
It posted revenue of more than $10 billion in the first quarter of this year, up 12.5% year-on-year, with net profit of almost $2.9 billion. The platform is forecasting revenue of more than $11 billion for the current quarter.
As of last December, the platform had more than 300 million subscribers worldwide, and had gained nearly 19 million of those in the last quarter of 2024.
However, it now states that it “no longer discloses” this metric, in order to focus on audience “engagement metrics” instead (time that users spend actually watching content).
It comes after the company’s rate of new subscribers appeared to be declining, amid Netflix’s attempts to crack down on password sharing between users for the same account.

‘Revenue per subscriber’ and advertising
Ross Benes, a US journalist who specialises in media and streaming, told BFMTV that the entire streaming industry is now “focusing less on audience gains and more on revenue per subscriber”.
“Consumers can expect further price increases [in future],” he predicted.
In the US in December, subscription prices rose from US $15.50 to $18 for the ad-free Standard plan, while the Standard plan with advertising rose from $7 to $8 per month.
The last increase for subscribers in France came in October 2024, when the ‘Premium’ subscription was increased from €17.99 to €19.99 per month.
The two Standard package prices were last changed in France in October 2023.
These two options reflect the platform’s new focus on generating revenue from advertising. “We doubled our advertising revenue year-over-year in 2024, and we expect to double it again this year,” said Greg Peters, Netflix co-CEO, in January.
Europeans are very significant users of Netflix, with statistics platform Statista estimating that “by 2026, around 86 million Europeans are forecast to have a Netflix subscription”.
The website also states that Netflix is the leading streaming service available in France, with as many as 27 million individual users in the country by 2024. This puts Netflix ahead of second-place Amazon Prime Video, and third-place Disney+.
