Register for November vote, Americans in France told
Authorities recommend US citizens living overseas register by August 1 to ensure vote in mid-term elections
As Americans across the world prepare for the July 4 celebrations, authorities are setting out to ensure as many as possible think ahead and register to vote in the mid-term elections in November.
The call comes as Armed Forces Voters Week and Overseas Citizens Voters Week - the brainchild of the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP) draws to a close - and the deadline for registration looms.
Due to variations in state deadlines for absentee votes, the FVAP urged voters to register as earlier as possible and request their ballot to improve the likelihood they can successfully vote in the elections on November 6 in which all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate will be contested. A total 39 state and territorial governorships and numerous state and local elections will also take place.
The FVAP recommends voters use the Federal Post Card Application (FPCA), available at FVAP.gov, to register to vote and request an absentee ballot by August. 1 to ensure they can participate in the elections on November 6.
On the site, eligible voters can find their state's specific voter registration and ballot request deadlines, as well as information on completing their application, which is accepted by all states and territories.
Voters can fill out the form by hand or use the online assistant before they print, sign and post it to their election office.
The voting rights of 2.6 million US citizens living overseas, as well as 1.3million members of the armed services and eligible family members, are protected by the Uniformed and Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA).
