A rip current alert has been issued by the Nouvelle-Aquitaine prefecture, advising beachgoers to exercise extreme caution today and tomorrow.
Several departments in the region are affected: Pyrénées-Atlantiques, Landes, Gironde and Charente-Maritime, with Tuesday, June 30 and Wednesday, July 1 classified as days of maximum risk for dangerous currents.
Strong rip currents can be particularly hazardous, with numerous incidents reported each year, some resulting in drowning.
The prefecture is advising anyone who chooses to swim to do so only in supervised and authorised areas, to always keep children under constant supervision at the beach, and to avoid entering the water if feeling unwell, fatigued, or experiencing any health issues or chills. Swimmers are also urged not to overestimate their abilities.
Axel Lamotte, head of the Fédération française des maîtres-nageurs sauveteurs (lifeguards), has previously explained to The Connexion that understanding one’s own limits in the water is essential. “Some people overestimate their strength. It is, once again, a question of understanding your own abilities in the water,” he said.
He also highlighted the importance of being cautious during periods of high heat, when people may be more inclined to enter the water.
Prolonged exposure to the sun can lead to dehydration, fatigue, dizziness and reduced physical performance. Entering cold water suddenly after overheating may also trigger thermal shock, which can result in loss of consciousness.
Finally, in the event of an emergency, or if someone is seen in difficulty in the water, it is essential to call 112. People are strongly advised not to attempt a rescue unless properly trained.
“When someone is drowning, they are not in control of their actions,” Mr Lamotte added. “They may panic and pull the rescuer under.”
