SNCF to make its prices clearer

Consumer groups say those without internet access likely to get ripped-off in confusion.

THE SNCF has promised to make its ticket prices clearer after discussions with consumer groups.

The head of the company's long distance section Mireille Faugère admitted there was "work to be done" to improve the presentation of prices for customers to compare journeys.

Consumer group CLCV spokesman Thierry Sagniez said: "The SNCF's system is designed for the internet and is useful for those who have this and can see all the tariffs online.

"However, when a person comes to the ticket office, an SNCF employee does not have the time to explain to them all the different tariffs."

Mr Sagniez said this often meant customers buying tickets without knowing the best deal and added the SNCF needed to take measures or "risk the loss of consumer confidence as people feel ripped off."

The system has also been criticised by MP Hervé Mariton who produced a report on its complexity.

The SNCF will present its new prices on October 28.
