South-west has costliest coffee

A cup in Aquitaine costs more than one in the Ile-de-France says a coffee study

A CUP of coffee costs more in Aquitaine than the Ile-de-France, a study says.

The finding was one of the more surprising discoveries in a survey by catering sector analysts Gira Conseil.

Having looked at the sandwich with a study called the “indice jambon/beurre (ham sandwich indicator), it has looked at coffee with one called the indice Kfé Equip’ Hôtel.

It shows that on average – taking account of 1,252 different outlets studied including cafés, hotels and work canteens - a small espresso-style coffee costs €1.38. That compares to €2.78 in Switzerland, but only €0.57 in Portugal.

In Aquitaine a coffee costs €1.72 – more than Ile-de-France, €1.66 or the Midi-Pyrénées and the Languedoc-Roussillon, €1.64. The cheapest areas include Limousin, €1.30 and Corsica, €1.33.

Coffee also tends to cost a little more in cities as opposed to small towns, while being served at the table is the most expensive way to take it – on average €2.34. The cheapest coffee is from machines (average €0.91) or in work canteens (€0.62).

Gira Conseil says that the idea of the €1 or less coffee is catching on in restaurants and canteens, which want to encourage people to linger with a coffee rather than going home or back to the office for one.
