Speed trap video prompts net debate
Video shows camera flashing 54 vehicles in three minutes, but authorities say it can do many, many more
A VIDEO of a speed camera flashing 54 vehicles in just three minutes is taking off on social media.
The camera is the first of a new batch of ‘autonomous’ units to be used in the Haute-Garonne.
Unlike traditional speed cameras, these units are not fixed and can be moved to different roads depending on needs.
In this particular case the camera had been set up to monitor a stretch of road where the speed limit had been dropped from its usual 90kph to 70kph because of roadworks.
Despite the frenetic flashing, the Haute-Garonne prefecture says there is no chance of the camera being overwhelmed. It is capable of capturing 7,500 vehicles an hour - that being 125 a minute, or just over two a second.
