Spring snow leaves 50,000 French homes without power

Engineers are working to restore power to some 50,000 properties that were cut off due to heavy overnight snowfall.

Unexpected snow caused major damage to the electricity network, notably due to falling trees, supplier Enedis said, and that 35,000 homes in the Haute-Savoie, 9,000 in Isère and 6,000 in Savoie had been cut off.

"Enedis technicians and specialist companies have been mobilised since the early hours of the crisis and will continue their work until late at night," the company said in a statement, adding that the operation was hindered because snow had made numerous roads impassable.
