Tourist hotspots could open 7/7
Ministry of Culture is considering plans to open three of Paris’s most popular attractions every day of the week
THREE of Paris’s most popular tourist attractions could soon open seven days a week.
The ministry of culture is considering opening the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay and Versailles every day to accommodate the growing number of visitors, and counter lower government subsidies, according to Le Figaro.
Currently, the attractions are closed on either a Monday or Tuesday, but the ministry has seen the positive impact on visitor numbers enjoyed by museums and tourist attractions in Madrid and New York in recent years and is considering following suit.
Last year, the Louvre welcomed 9.2million visitors, Versailles attracted 7million tourists and the Musée d’Orsay 3.5million.
London’s, major museums - including the British Museum, National Gallery, Tate Modern, Tate Britain - open seven days a week while the Prado in Madrid has welcomed visitors every day of the week since November 2011.
New York’s major institutions took plunge last year.
The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) has seen the number of visitors double from 1.5million to three million since it was renovated in 2004 and became a seven-day operation.
The Metropolitan New York followed suit - and now welcomes more than six million visitors a year, while the Natural History Museum, only closes at Thanksgiving and Christmas Day.
