Two people have been killed and several others injured - one of them seriously - after a train derailed in the Alps in southern France.

The train came off the tracks after hitting rocks that had fallen from surrounding hills, according to emergency services at the scene.

Passengers were travelling from Nice to the town of Digne-les-Bains when the train came off the rails between Annot and St Benoît in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, reported local newspaper Nice Matin.

The paper reports that 30 people were on the train at the time.
