Unions divided on further strikes

Another day of industrial action could be called for later this month, depending on turnout at tomorrow's demonstrations

UNIONS have announced plans for a further day of nationwide action later this month, but have yet to agree on a date or what form it should take.

Divisions have started to arise among the eight major trade unions, as representatives took three hours last night to reach a compromise on their next move in the protest against the government's pensions reform.

In a joint statement, the unions said they were planning a new day of action "in the week of November 22-26".

However, they agreed to wait until after the weekend to decide on what form the action will take, depending on the turnout for Saturday's demonstrations around France.

The CFTC union said it would keep a close eye on Saturday's marches to see "if people want to continue or whether they have had enough".

Another union, the CFDT, said it was not planning any more major strikes or demonstrations, believing the pensions reform protest to be over.
