UPDATE: Lyon fail in hat-trick bid

UPDATE: Footballers fail to become first to win Champions League three years in a row

OLYMPIQUE Lyonnais women’s team lost 1-0 to German club Wolfsburg at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge in London as they tried to become the first to win the European Champions League three times in a row.

Wolfsburg won with a penalty from Müller in the 74th minute.

It is the fourth year since 2010 that the Lyonnaises had come up against a German team: going out on penalties against Potsdam in 2010, then beating the same team the next year and then Frankfurt in 2012.

Lyon and Frankfurt are the only teams to win three titles, but not in consecutive years.

Lyon coach Patrice Lair said before the game it would be "a very difficult final against an excellent opponent who has just done the double in Germany"

Magazine Télé-Loisirs urged people to watch women's football, praising its “technical and tactical qualities and football that is much more than open than the men’s game.”
