Update: man held for Paris shooting

Police have arrested a man in an underground car-park after gun attacks on newspaper, bank and TV station

A MAN has been arrested in connection with armed attacks on the offices of Libération where a photographer was shot in the chest, the headquarters of Société Générale and BFMTV.

Police sources said the man, Abdelhakim Dekhar, was found semi-conscious in a car in an underground car-park in the Paris north-eastern suburb of Bois-Colombes.

Interior Minister told reporters that Dekhar, 48, had apparently tried to commit suicide and had left several notes. He was known to police after being jailed for four years in 1998 for his involvement in a shoot-out that claimed five lives, including three police.

A manhunt started in Paris on Monday after a man walked into the offices of Libération and opened fire, seriously injuring a 27-year-old photographer who had just arrived for his first day at work.

The photographer remains in a serious condition in hospital.

The gunman was next seen firing at the headquarters of the Société Générale bank in the business district La Défense.

Moments later he hijacked a motorist and forced him at gunpoint to drive to the Champs-Élysées, where he got out and disappeared near the Metro at the Georges V station.

Police believe the man is also behind three previous attacks, including a hold up at BFMTV.
