Voters divided on ballot decision

Forty-four per cent believe UMP should call on tactical vote to oppose Front National; 40 per cent agree with stance

VOTERS are split over the UMP's decision not to call on its supporters to oppose the Front National.

While the Socialist Party asked voters to choose their rivals the UMP where faced with a Front National candidate, their tactical voting call has not been echoed by the UMP.

A poll published today in Le Parisien shows that, although 44 per cent of people believe the UMP should join the Socialists in a tactical voting alliance against the Front National, 40 per cent believe they are right to let voters decide for themselves.

Nine per cent believed the centre-right UMP should even call on supporters to vote Front National against a Socialist candidate.

The second round of cantonal elections takes place on Sunday, with Front National candidates running in 394 districts, against the Socialist Party in 204 seats and the UMP in 190.

The survey involved 1,261 people and was carried out by Harris Interactive.
