Whoppers sell out at Burger King

The chain’s comeback has been a big success so far, with its only outlet swamped with demand

BURGER King’s new outlet at Marseilles-Provence airport – the only one in France – is doing a roaring trade, selling up to 2,000 meals a day.

Europe 1 radio says fast-food fans are going to the airport especially to visit the takeaway, which represents the chain’s comeback in France after 15 years away.

For some it is a matter of “nostalgia”, the station said. “It brings back memories,” said one customer. Others came out of curiosity – “friends told us you’ve got to at least taste it,” one said.

The restaurant was even forced to close for a few hours at one point because it ran out of stock.

“Take-away bags are not enough, they’re coming with cardboard boxes,” a manager told Europe 1. “We are victims of our success, there are no more Whoppers in stock.”

Among the keenest are firefighters from Marseille fire stations who collect batches to take to colleagues, he said.

Some people have been waiting up to an hour to eat burgers like the “double Whopper”, which fans consider “the Rolls-Royce of burgers in France”.
