France produced 45,562,133 hectolitres of wine in 2016, a 5% drop on 2015.
The fall announced by French customs officials under new Open Data transparency guidelines, was linked to bad weather, including frost and hail.
However, France will still remain in the trio of leading producers after Italy and ahead of Spain.
