Would-be burglars attempt break-in at Jane Birkin’s home in Paris
The Anglo-French singer, who rose to fame following her relationship with Serge Gainsbourg, died on Sunday aged 76
A burglary attempt was made at the Paris home of Anglo-French singer Jane Birkin, who died on Sunday aged 76, according to BFMTV.
Around 4am on Wednesday (July 19), a childhood friend of Birkin’s - currently staying at the home - heard noises from the main door, before quickly calling the police.
When they arrived, the police found signs of an attempted entry near the door, alongside pieces of wood from the door on the floor and damage to its metal frame.
The day before, neighbours had already intervened and frightened off a group of individuals looking to enter the home.
Security measures have been installed at the singer’s home in Finistère, by the local prefecture, including the presence of police and gendarmes outside the house.
The house in Brittany was owned by the singer for more than 30 years and was where she spent much of her time.
Tributes from daughters
Tributes have been pouring in for the singer and actress since her death on Sunday.
President Emmanuel Macron called her a “French icon” and friend and musical collaborator Étienne Daho said it is “unimaginable to live in a world without [her] light.”

On Monday (July 17) evening, the singer’s two daughters – Charlotte Gainsbourg and Lou Doillon – released a press statement on their mother’s death.
“Jane Birkin has gone after 16 years of a relentless battle against illness, since her stroke in September 2021 and the wonderful nursing staff have been by her side night and day,” said the message.
“She was walking again, motivated to reschedule her concerts [at the] Olympia and had decided to regain her independence.”
